A Journey of Courage: Maria's Fight Against Leukemia
Hello, my name is Dr. Isha Kaul, Director in the Department of Haematology, Oncology & Bone Marrow Transplant at Max Super Speciality Hospital, Vaishali.
Today I want to share the incredible journey of one of our patients from Fiji - Maria, a 38-year-old woman whose story reflects not just the challenges of cancer, but also the strength of the human spirit, the importance of timely treatment, and the power of compassion.
The First Signs
In January 2025, Maria began experiencing unusual symptoms unexplained bruising, gum bleeding, and persistent fever. At first, these signs seemed small, but deep down she knew something wasn't right. By March, her condition had worsened, and she came to us seeking answers.
Our investigations revealed what we feared most - Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML), one of the most aggressive and life-threatening forms of blood cancer. AML progresses rapidly, and without immediate treatment, it can be fatal.
Fighting Back with Treatment
Fortunately, Maria came to us just in time. She was stable enough for us to start life-saving chemotherapy without delay.
Her treatment journey included multiple cycles-induction chemotherapy followed by consolidation therapy. These treatments were not easy. Chemotherapy for AML is often harsh, bringing fatigue, pain and emotional strain. But Maria showed extraordinary courage.
With her family standing strong beside her, and our medical team committed to her care, Maria faced each challenge head-on. Step by step, she overcame every hurdle.
Today, I am proud to share that Maria is in remission-healthy, hopeful, and preparing to return home to Fiji.
Lessons from Maria's Journey

Early diagnosis saves lives. Acute blood cancers like AML can be treated successfully if recognized and managed on time.
Every patient's journey is unique. Some patients may require bone marrow transplants autologous or allogeneic while for others, chemotherapy alone can be effective. The key lies in timely, personalized treatment and continuous support.
