Founder & Chairman - Asian Heart Institute
48+ years experience
Dr. Ramakanta Panda is a world-renowned cardiovascular thoracic surgeon and the Vice Chairman and Managing Director of the Asian Heart Institute (AHI) in Mumbai. Often referred to as one of the safest heart surgeons in the world, his journey from a small village in Odisha to the pinnacle of global cardiac surgery is a testament to perseverance, visionary leadership, and an uncompromising commitment to medical excellence.
Dr. Panda’s medical journey began in Odisha, inspired by a feature on the legendary American heart surgeon Dr. Denton A. Cooley. After completing his foundational studies at BJD College and SCB Medical College in Odisha, he moved to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi for his post-graduation. His academic brilliance was evident when he emerged as the topper of his batch, setting the stage for a career defined by high-level specialized training.
To gain global exposure, Dr. Panda moved to the United States after clearing the USMLE. He secured a prestigious position at the Cleveland Clinic, which was then, and remains today, a global leader in cardiac care. His time there was transformative; he was deeply impressed by the institution's rigorous quality protocols and state-of-the-art infrastructure. This experience fueled his ambition to return to India and establish a cardiac center that matched international benchmarks.
Returning to India, Dr. Panda faced significant hurdles in realizing his dream. He lacked sufficient initial funding and was initially allotted a plot of land that was deemed unsuitable for construction. However, through resourcefulness and determination, he secured a location in Mumbai's Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC).
In a move that highlighted his dedication to detail, he flew his architects and interior designers to the US to study modern hospital designs firsthand. He insisted on a layout that prioritized patient safety, infection control, and efficient clinical workflows, transforming a challenging plot of land into a state-of-the-art medical facility.
Dr. Panda is widely celebrated for his expertise in complex cardiac procedures, particularly for patients who have been turned down by other centers. His clinical focus includes:
Beating Heart Surgery: Mastery in performing bypass surgery without stopping the heart.
Redo Bypass Surgery: Expertise in performing second, third, or even fourth bypass surgeries.
Total Arterial Revascularization: Using arterial grafts for better long-term durability.
High-Risk Cardiac Cases: Successfully operating on patients with multiple comorbidities.
