Dr. Prof. Sanjay Tyagi is a towering figure in cardiovascular medicine, currently serving as the Clinical Director of Cardiology for the Apollo Hospitals Group (Northern Region). With a career spanning 40 years, his influence extends from the bedside to the highest levels of national healthcare policy. As a former Director General of Health Services for the Government of India, Dr. Tyagi has played a pivotal role in shaping the medical landscape of the country while maintaining a reputation for clinical excellence and compassionate care.
Before his leadership at Apollo, Dr. Tyagi dedicated over three decades to the G.B. Pant Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), where he served as Director, Professor, and Head of Cardiology. His academic contributions are equally distinguished, having served as the Dean of Maulana Azad Medical College. His commitment to medical education was formally recognized in 2022 with the Eminent Medical Teacher Award, highlighting his role in mentoring generations of India's leading cardiologists.
Dr. Tyagi is internationally recognized as a pioneer in interventional cardiology. His groundbreaking work includes significant advancements in balloon angioplasty for native coarctation of the aorta and specialized interventions for Takayasu’s arteritis and renovascular hypertension. His technical mastery has been celebrated globally, including the "Best Challenging Case Award" by the Cardiovascular Research Foundation (USA), solidifying his status as a master of complex cardiac interventions.
With over 300 research articles published in premier journals such as Circulation, The American Heart Journal, and Heart (UK), Dr. Tyagi is one of the most cited cardiologists in the region. His research is a staple in major textbooks of Cardiology and Cardiovascular Surgery, and he has authored over 40 chapters in leading medical texts. His global standing is further evidenced by his role as the Secretary General of the International College of Angiology and his position on the editorial board of the Angiology Journal (USA).
In 2008, Dr. Tyagi was conferred the Dr. B.C. Roy National Award by the President of India, the highest honor in the Indian medical fraternity.
