57+ years experience
Dr. Naresh Trehan is a world-renowned cardiovascular and cardiothoracic surgeon whose name is synonymous with the evolution of heart care in India. As the Chairman and Managing Director of Medanta – The Medicity, he has realized a vision of providing world-class medical care integrated with holistic healing. With a staggering record of over 48,000 successful open-heart surgeries, Dr. Trehan’s hands have shaped the survival and well-being of thousands across the globe.
Before revolutionizing healthcare in India, Dr. Trehan spent nearly two decades at the New York University Medical Center. In 1988, he returned to India with a mission to bring international surgical standards home, founding the Escorts Heart Institute. Under his leadership, it became a premier center for cardiac excellence. In 2009, he expanded this vision by establishing Medanta, a multi-specialty institute that today stands as a global destination for complex medical procedures.
Dr. Trehan is widely recognized for his pioneering work in minimally invasive cardiac surgery. His expertise spans a wide array of advanced procedures, including Robotic Heart Surgery, Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG), and complex Valvular Heart Repairs. A unique advantage in his career is his ambidexterity; though born left-handed, his ability to use both hands with equal precision has become a hallmark of his surgical mastery.
In recognition of his monumental service to the nation, the Government of India has honored Dr. Trehan with the Padma Bhushan and the Padma Shri. His clinical authority is further highlighted by his role as the personal surgeon to the President of India since 1991. He is also a recipient of the prestigious Dr. B.C. Roy National Award and the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Award for excellence in public administration and management.
Dr. Trehan’s clinical foundation began at King George’s Medical University, followed by rigorous training and certification by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Cardiothoracic Surgery. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine in London and an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons.
