Chairperson - Radiation Oncology
42+ years experience
Dr. Tejinder Kataria is a world-renowned Radiation Oncologist and a transformative figure in the field of clinical radiotherapy. Currently serving as the Chairperson of Radiation Oncology at the Medanta Cancer Institute, Gurugram, she brings over 35 years of profound clinical experience. Her career is defined by her role as a pioneer who has consistently introduced the world’s most advanced radiation technologies to India, fundamentally changing the standard of care for cancer patients.
Dr. Kataria is credited with several "firsts" in the Indian healthcare landscape. She introduced India’s first Infinity Linear Accelerator equipped with Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT), which allows for high-precision radiation delivery in significantly shorter timeframes. Furthermore, she established North India’s first Integrated Brachytherapy Unit and initiated Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy (SBRT), providing non-invasive alternatives for treating complex tumors with extreme accuracy.
A foundational force in Indian oncology, Dr. Kataria is responsible for establishing the Department of Radiation Oncology at three major institutions: Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute (New Delhi), Artemis Health Institute (Gurugram), and Medanta – The Medicity. Her leadership extends to global policy, having served with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) QUATRO Asia team and contributing to the National Cancer Control Program for the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, India.
Under her guidance, the latest updates in stereotactic radiation treatment have been integrated into clinical practice, including Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS) and Image-Guided Radiotherapy (IGRT). Her expertise encompasses highly specialized modalities such as Total Body Irradiation (TBI) and Total Skin Electron Therapy (TSET). These advanced techniques ensure that patients with both solid tumors and hematological malignancies receive localized treatment that spares healthy surrounding tissues.
Dr. Kataria’s academic pedigree includes training at premier global institutions, including PGI Chandigarh, the University of Cambridge, the University of Leeds, and Harvard University. This international exposure allows her to implement sophisticated protocols like Intensity-Modulated Radiotherapy (IMRT) and Image-Guided Brachytherapy at a world-class level. Her dedication to clinical research and technological integration continues to place her at the forefront of the evolving global oncological landscape.
