
An Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate (ESR), often called a "sed rate," is a common blood test used to detect and monitor inflammation in the body. It is frequently ordered alongside a Complete Blood Count (CBC) as part of a comprehensive health evaluation or "complete hemogram".
Sample Collection & Tube Setup: A small blood sample is placed into a tall, thin vertical tube to observe cell movement over the course of one hour.
Normal Blood State Sinking: In a healthy, normal state, red blood cells naturally repel each other and sink relatively slowly to the bottom of the tube.
Inflammatory State Reaction: Active inflammation causes the liver to release proteins like fibrinogen into the blood, which alters the electrical charge of red blood cells.
Rouleaux Formation & Accelerated Sinking: These inflammatory proteins cause red blood cells to stick together in stacks called rouleaux, making them heavier so they sink much faster and produce an elevated ESR result.
Inflammation Detection: Identifies the presence of hidden or systemic inflammatory conditions throughout the body.
Autoimmune & Joint Disease Monitoring: Helps track active flare-ups and treatment progress for conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, or polymyalgia rheumatica.
